(A) Den Hoek

(pronounced as "dale" and also related to "dell" as in the nursery rhyme "The farmer and the dell.")
The "Deel," the heart of our building, was the heart of all most all traditional farmhouses in the Netherlands! Grain was threshed on it, hay was stored on the loft above it. And while cattle and horses were stabled along the sides, the farm family lived at the head where the fireplace was, all in one open space under a shared roof keeping each other safe and warm for thousands of years.

Eventually partitions went up to separate "man and beast" but on some farms people (very poor people) lived like that into the early Twentieth Century!

We "converted" the stable area to accommodate our cheesemaking facility, sales counter and cafe. The hayloft houses our giftshop and the "Deel" functions like a common area with enough room for large groups. Enough room for bus tours, school outtings or even weddings!
